Using FSA for Embryo Storage, IVF & Fertility Treatments

Thinking about starting fertility treatment? Did you know that you can use your FSA to pay for some of your out-of-pocket costs for IVF and all other fertility treatments?

If you have health insurance through your employer, you really should consider enrolling in a Flexible Spending Account.

What is a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)?

A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) allows you to set aside and pay for healthcare costs using pretax dollars that you have decided to contribute & have been deducted from your gross pay. Your company typically will have an open enrollment period each year in November & December. Once you’ve committed to a dollar amount, you can’t change it and you usually are in a “use it or lose it” situation.  However, your employer may offer some other options like:

  • a 2 ½ month “grace period” to use up your funds.
  • Or they can allow you to carry over up to $570 per year (as per 2022) to use the following year.

Your company can only offer one of the above options, not both and it’s not mandatory that they offer either. In addition, some employers will contribute to your FSA, but again they aren’t legally bound to do so.

Your maximum contribution level changes per year, please discuss with your HR department to see how much you can contribute.

Leveraging FSAs for Fertility Treatments

FSA’s can be used for fertility treatments like IVF. IVF (in vitro fertilization) is the process where an egg is fertilized outside the body in a controlled lab environment. The IRS lists IVF as an acceptable treatment for use of your FSA funds.

You can also use your pretax dollars for assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures, including surgeries, performed on both you and your spouse.

Temporary storage of egg, embryo or sperm and some medications required for IVF are all FSA Eligible.

It’s always best to check with your employer on your FSA’s limits and coverage. IRMS offers free Financial Counsellor consults to discuss your finance options for fertility treatment. You can find more information regarding fertility insurance options, New Jersey and New York mandates and potential fees here on our website. Our teams also are equipped to navigate grants and other financing options, depending on your circumstances.

Financing a fertility treatment journey is certainly daunting. We are here to guide you through the process & empower you with choice.
